Who Are You Listening To?

Who are the people who influence your thinking and behavior?

For real, not rhetoric. Take a few minutes and list the dominant voices in your life. Think about who you spend your time with, who you find yourself quoting, who you like and retweet.

  • Family members

  • Colleagues

  • Supervisors

  • Subordinates

  • Friends

  • Fans

  • Teachers

  • Mentors

  • Authors

  • Speakers

  • Bloggers

  • Podcasters

  • Tweeters

  • Celebrities

Now take a look at your list. Are any of these people different from you? Do any of them come from a different gender, race, culture, socioeconomic status, political party, or theological perspective? Beware of listening only to those like you, those you always agree with, or those who always agree with you. Listen to and learn from those who are different. Growth happens through the disequilibrium created by these differences.

Which different voices can you begin listening to in the coming weeks?
